What the ENT Allergy Clinic offers:
Allergy Skin Testing
The ENT Allergy Clinic tests adults and children (ages 5 years and older) for 33 of the area's most common environmental and household allergens. This test includes both prick & intradermal (under the skin) methods. The allergens tested include: grasses, trees, weeds, dust mite, animal dander & molds.
Testing for Food Allergies
If there is a question about a possible food allergy, a blood test can be performed to determine food sensitivity. Most foods can be tested, but 95% of all food allergies are usually due to just a few foods.
Allergy shots are usually given weekly in the office for the 1st year, every other week for the 2nd year, and every 3 to 4 weeks thereafter. If taken consistently, shots take a total of 3 to 5 years of treatment to complete therapy. Symptom improvement may be seen as early as 3 months, but may take up to a year to achieve best results.
Sublingual Immunotherapy (SLIT)
Allergy drops are a safe, effective alternative to allergy shots. Daily doses of specially formulated allergy serum is placed under the tongue (instead of weekly injections). For patients who may be afraid of shots, or for those who have a busy schedule, SLIT is an alternative option. This treatment is endorsed by the American Academy of Otolaryngic Allergy. SLIT is available to patients as an out-of-pocket expense, however, may be a cheaper option than shots.
